Dental Hygiene Month: 6 core habits for a healthier smile

Quick answer
Healthy teeth and gums come down to a few daily habits: brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth once a day, spit (don't rinse) after brushing, limit how often you have sugary or acidic food and drinks, drink tap water, and keep up regular check-ups and cleans with your dental team.
What is Dental Hygiene Month?
October is recognised internationally as Dental Hygiene Month, a time to celebrate the work of dental hygienists and focus on the everyday habits that protect our teeth and gums. In Australia, Dental Health Week runs each August, but October is a timely reminder too, especially heading into the busy end of year.
At CBD Dental on Castlereagh Street, our hygienists and dentists see first-hand how small habits add up over years. Some of our patients have been coming to us for decades, and the habits below are the ones we come back to most often.
6 core dental hygiene habits
1. Brush twice a day, for two minutes
Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle the bristles towards the gum line and use small, gentle circles. Brushing harder doesn't clean better and can wear gums and enamel over time.
2. Clean between your teeth every day
A toothbrush can't reach between teeth, which is where plaque often builds up. Floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser can all help. Our hygienists can show you which option and size suits your mouth.
3. Spit, don't rinse
After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste but skip the rinse. Leaving a thin layer of fluoride on your teeth gives it more time to strengthen enamel.
4. Watch how often you snack on sugar and acid
It's not only how much sugar you have, it's how often. Grazing from the office snack drawer or sipping a sweetened coffee or soft drink across the afternoon gives decay-causing bacteria more opportunities. Try to keep treats to mealtimes.
5. Choose tap water
Sydney's tap water is fluoridated, which helps protect teeth. Keeping a refillable bottle on your desk is an easy win for your teeth and your energy levels.
6. Keep up regular check-ups and cleans
Professional cleans remove hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing can't shift, and regular check-ups help us spot changes early. Many people come in every six months, but we'll recommend an interval that suits your mouth.
Making it work on a busy CBD workday
- Keep a travel toothbrush and floss in your desk drawer or gym bag.
- Rinse with water after your afternoon coffee.
- Book around your workday. We open from 8am Tuesday to Friday and stay open until 7pm on Tuesdays, a short walk from Martin Place and St James stations.
What happens at a check-up and clean at CBD Dental?
Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and soft tissues, using digital X-rays only when they're needed. One of our hygienists then removes plaque and tartar, applies fluoride and gives you personalised advice for home. We take the time to explain what we see, and you set the pace. If you'd like a break at any point, just let us know.

Frequently asked questions
Many people come in every six months, but the right interval depends on your gum health, your risk of decay and your general health. Your dentist will recommend a schedule that suits you.
Both can clean well when used properly. Some people find an electric toothbrush makes it easier to brush thoroughly for the full two minutes. Bring it up at your next visit and we can check your technique.
Bleeding gums are often a sign of inflammation (gingivitis). It's worth booking a check-up so we can assess your gums and show you how to clean between your teeth comfortably.
